Te Hau Ora
My imagination of the whakapapa of mauri through breath. I wanted to visually express my understanding of the concept of mauri as a form of energy which flows through every thing, living or inanimate, in the universe. Mauri is usually translated as life-force, an energy which is partly physical and partly spiritual. Te Hau Ora focuses on the mauri of human beings.
In Maori creation narratives the first human being, Hineahuone, was formed from earth and brought to life when the atua (supernatural being) Tane breathed into her mouth, giving her the mauri needed for life. Whenever we take a breath we are reinacting that first ever breath. The breath and the mauri it carries and represents, passes down through the generations to you and I. Te Hau Ora translates as 'the living breath'.
