Kapiti

A multimedia work based on the tukutuku (weaving) panel, created for a Toi Atea (Maori Visual Culture). I was required to research the history of a particular area in relation to land confiscation and claims. The Kapiti area and in particular Kapiti Island was the site of several large battles over land and much violence and cruelty. I chose to portray this history from the point of view of the people left behind after the battle, the women and children who must have felt much grief for their lost loved ones. This sadness is shown in the subdued colouring and imagery, with the spirits of the dead departing as birds and only a hint of blood washing into the sea. The image was created in PhotoShop by merging photographs, printed and cut into strips which were stuck to a custom wood panel to give an appearance reminiscent of a tukutuku panel. Appropriate tukutuku and kowhaiwhai designs were then drawn over the whole panel.
